Locking Wheel Nut Removal Norwich

Lost the key, snapped it, or found the previous owner never left one? We remove locking wheel nuts without damaging the wheel, fit a fresh set, and get on with the tyre or brake job that needed the wheel off.

A locking wheel nut is a small security device that causes a disproportionate amount of misery. The key lives in the glovebox until the day it does not, or a previous garage rounded it, or the car came from an auction with no key at all, and now a puncture on the Dereham Road is a recovery job instead of a five-minute change. At Ber Street we remove locking wheel nuts of every type, keyed, spline, rotating-collar and the "anti-theft" designs, with purpose-made removal tools, in a way that protects the alloy, and we fit a new set with a key you get to keep. Bring the car in, or call us if it is stuck with a flat.

When You Need Locking Wheel Nuts Removed

  • The key is lost. The commonest case. It fell out of the glovebox, went with the old car, or was never handed over when you bought the car second hand.
  • The key is broken or rounded. Air guns and impatient fitters chew the splines; once the key spins in the nut it is finished.
  • The nut is damaged. A rusted or deformed locking nut that no longer accepts even a good key.
  • The key does not match. A second-hand car with a key for a different set, which happens more than you would think.
  • You are about to buy tyres or brakes and want the nuts off first so the job is not delayed. See the used car checks guide for what to ask for when buying.

How We Remove Them

We use professional locking-nut removal sockets and extractors matched to the type of nut, applied by hand with the wheel protected. On most cars all four come off in well under an hour and the alloy is unmarked. Rotating-collar designs and hardened "high-security" nuts take longer and occasionally need a more involved method; we tell you before we start. Very rarely a badly damaged nut will only come off by removing the wheel stud with it, in which case the stud is replaced and we quote that before proceeding rather than surprising you with it. We do not drill the wheel or attack the nut with a chisel; a damaged alloy is far more expensive than the nut was ever worth. See the alloy damage guide for why that matters.

What We Fit Afterwards

The removed nuts are scrap. We fit either a new set of locking wheel nuts with a key that you take away (and we suggest a photo of the key code in your phone), or, if you would rather never go through this again, a set of standard wheel nuts or bolts in the correct thread, seat and length for your wheels. Every nut is torqued to the manufacturer figure with a calibrated torque wrench, not an air gun, which is what protects the next key; see the wheel nut torque guide.

Good to know

Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key? Yes. We use purpose-made removal sockets and extractors matched to the type of nut, applied by hand with the wheel protected, and the alloy is normally unmarked.

Stuck With a Flat and No Key

If the car is at home or at the roadside with a puncture and no key, the honest options are a recovery service or your breakdown cover to bring the car to us, or a locking-nut removal at the roadside by a mobile service before you change the wheel. We are a workshop, not a mobile service; see why we do not fit tyres at the roadside. Once the car is with us, the nuts, the tyre and anything else are done in one visit, seven days a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?

Yes. We use purpose-made removal sockets and extractors matched to the type of nut, applied by hand with the wheel protected, and the alloy is normally unmarked.

Will removing the locking nuts damage my alloy wheels?

Not with the right tools and care. We do not drill the wheel or use a chisel. Very rarely a badly damaged nut must come off with the wheel stud, which we quote for before proceeding.

How long does locking wheel nut removal take?

Usually well under an hour for all four, longer for rotating-collar and hardened high-security designs. Most people wait.

Can I get a replacement key instead?

Sometimes, from the manufacturer or nut maker using the key code on the card that came with the car. Without the code, or if the nut is damaged, removal is quicker and often cheaper.

What do you fit instead?

A new locking set with a key you keep, or standard nuts or bolts in the correct thread, seat and length if you would rather not have locking nuts at all. All torqued correctly.

Do you come out to remove them?

No, we are a workshop at 100-106 Ber Street. Have the car recovered to us or use a mobile removal service at the roadside; once the car is here everything is done in one visit.
