MOT and Service Norwich
Drop the car once. We service it, check it against the MOT test items, arrange the test at a DVSA-approved centre and put right anything that would fail, with one quote and no chasing.
Combining the MOT with the annual service is the sensible way to run a car: the service catches the wear that would fail the test, the test checks the service was done properly, and you lose the car for one day instead of two. Here is how it works with us, honestly. Norwich Tyres & Auto Service is not itself a DVSA test station. We carry out the service and a pre-MOT inspection in our own workshop at Ber Street, arrange and present the car for its MOT at a trusted DVSA-approved test centre nearby, and carry out any repairs needed to pass. You deal with one garage, get one quote, and collect a serviced car with a fresh certificate.
Why Do Them Together
An MOT is a pass-or-fail inspection of the safety and emissions items on the day. It does not change the oil, replace a filter or tell you the brake pads have 20 percent left. A service does all of that but is not a legal certificate. Done separately, weeks apart, the common result is a service in March, a fail in June for a worn brake pad that the service had noted as an advisory, and two more visits. Done together, the service technician works with the test items in front of them: brakes, tyres, suspension, lights, wipers, exhaust and emissions all get attention before the car is presented, so the test becomes a formality rather than a gamble.
Interim, Full or Major Service With the MOT
- Interim service: oil and filter, fluid top-ups, tyre, brake and battery checks and a multi-point inspection. Right for a high-mileage car between full services, or a low-mileage car with a recent full service.
- Full service: the interim work plus air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs on petrol engines as due, and a thorough check of brakes, steering, suspension, cooling system and electrics against the manufacturer schedule. The usual annual choice, and the one that pairs best with the MOT.
- Major service: the full service plus the longer-interval items, typically brake fluid, fuel filter and coolant, roughly every two years or 24,000 miles.
Our interim vs full service guide sets out the differences in detail. Tell us the mileage and service history and we will recommend which, and quote it before you commit.

How the Day Runs
- Drop the car at 100-106 Ber Street in the morning; we open at 8am Monday to Saturday and there is free parking.
- We carry out the service and check the car against the MOT test items on our ramp.
- Anything that would fail is quoted to you by phone. Nothing is done without your approval.
- With repairs agreed and completed, we present the car for its MOT at the approved test centre.
- You collect a serviced car with a pass certificate, usually the same day, with one invoice.
If the car fails on something unexpected we carry out the repair and arrange the retest. GOV.UK sets the rules on retests: a car left with the test centre and retested within 10 working days needs only a partial retest with no fee, and certain items retested at the same centre by the end of the next working day are also free. We work within those rules so a fail does not mean paying for a whole second test.
Do you do the MOT test yourselves? No. We are not a DVSA test station. We service the car and do the pre-MOT inspection and any repairs in our own workshop, then arrange and present the car for its test at a trusted DVSA-approved centre nearby, and arrange the retest if needed. For you it is one drop-off, one garage and one quote.
The MOT Fee and What Else You Pay For
The MOT test fee for a car is capped by law at £54.85 (class 4); the cap is £58.60 for class 7 vans up to 3,500 kg and £29.65 for motorcycles. No test centre may charge more for the test itself. Everything else, the service, the pre-MOT check and any repairs, is our work and is quoted separately and clearly before we start, so the invoice has no surprises on it. If the car needs nothing beyond the service, the invoice is the service and the test fee.
What Fails Cars, and What We Check
The national failure statistics are consistent year after year: lighting and signalling, suspension, brakes, tyres and driver visibility (wipers, washers, windscreen damage) account for the great majority of fails. All of them are things a service should catch, and all of them are checked before we present the car. Tyres at or near the 1.6 mm legal minimum are replaced or flagged; a brake pad close to its wear limit is quoted; a blown bulb is simply changed. Our MOT page has more on the pre-MOT check itself and on the warning lights that now count against a car.
Vans, Hybrids and Older Cars
Vans up to 3,500 kg fall under class 7 and are arranged at a centre that tests them; the service is the same principle, with the loads and mileages a working van does taken into account. Hybrids and electric cars still need an MOT and a service, minus the oil change on a full EV, and we look after both. Older cars with advisories carried over from previous tests are where doing the service and MOT together pays most: we work through the advisory list with you and agree what is genuinely needed rather than clearing it wholesale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do the MOT test yourselves?
No. We are not a DVSA test station. We service the car and do the pre-MOT inspection and any repairs in our own workshop, then arrange and present the car for its test at a trusted DVSA-approved centre nearby, and arrange the retest if needed. For you it is one drop-off, one garage and one quote.
How much does an MOT and service cost?
The MOT test fee for a car is capped by law at £54.85 and no centre may charge more for the test. The service and any repairs are quoted separately before we start, based on the car, the service level you choose and what we find. Call with the registration and we will quote.
Can I have the MOT and service done in one day?
Usually, yes. Drop the car in the morning, we service it, check it against the test items, quote any work, present it for the test and you collect it the same day in most cases. Bigger repairs can add a day.
Should I service the car before or after the MOT?
Before, and ideally at the same visit. The service catches the wear that fails cars, so the test becomes a check rather than a gamble. Servicing after a fail means two visits and often a retest fee.
What happens if the car fails its MOT?
We repair the fault in our workshop and arrange the retest. Under GOV.UK rules a car left at the test centre and retested within 10 working days needs only a partial retest with no fee, and some items retested by the end of the next working day are also free, so a fail rarely means paying for a full second test.
How early can I get the MOT done?
Up to a month minus a day before the current certificate expires, while keeping the same renewal date. Booking early leaves room for repairs without the car going off the road.
