4x4 and SUV Tyres Norwich

From a school-run Qashqai to a Defender that works for its living: the right pattern, the right load rating and matched tread depths where four-wheel drive demands it.

Norfolk runs on SUVs and 4x4s. The Qashqais, Kugas, Tiguans and Sportages on the school run in Hethersett and Sprowston, the Range Rovers and X5s coming down Newmarket Road, and the Defenders, Hiluxes and Rangers that actually leave the tarmac around Dereham and Reepham all end up on our ramp at Ber Street. They need different tyres, and the biggest mistake we see is treating a heavy SUV like a big hatchback and a working 4x4 like an SUV.

Road SUVs: Weight Is the Whole Story

A family SUV is typically 300 to 500 kg heavier than the hatchback it replaced and sits higher, so it asks more of its tyres in every braking and cornering event. Load rating matters more than on a small car, wet grip matters more because there is more mass to stop, and a cheap tyre that would be adequate on a Fiesta can feel vague and stop late on a Kuga. For the road-only SUV we usually recommend a mid-range or premium touring pattern with a strong wet grip grade, and we will show you the tyre label so the choice is yours.

Four-Wheel Drive: Why the Tread Depths Have to Match

On a permanent or automatic four-wheel-drive system, the front and rear axles are linked through a centre differential, viscous coupling or Haldex-type clutch. If one tyre is significantly newer than the others its rolling circumference is larger, the system sees it as slip, and it works constantly to correct a difference that never goes away. That wears couplings and differentials that cost far more than a set of tyres.

Many manufacturers therefore specify a maximum tread depth difference across all four wheels, and on some vehicles a single new tyre is simply not acceptable. When you ring about one tyre for an AWD vehicle we will ask about the other three, measure them when you arrive and tell you honestly whether one, two or four is the right answer. Sometimes the correct fix for a single damaged tyre is a repair precisely because it preserves the match.

All-Terrain, Highway-Terrain or Mud-Terrain

  • Highway-terrain (H/T): a road pattern in a 4x4 size. Quiet, long-lasting and the right choice for a Discovery or Range Rover that never sees more than a gravel drive.
  • All-terrain (A/T): a blockier tread that copes with farm tracks, wet grass at a show ground and towing off a field, at the cost of some road noise and wet-tarmac grip. The honest choice for a Defender, Hilux or Ranger that works and commutes.
  • Mud-terrain (M/T): aggressive, noisy and poor on wet tarmac. Only worth it if the vehicle genuinely lives off-road. We will talk you out of it for a daily driver.

Whichever pattern you choose, the load and speed rating stay non-negotiable, and on a vehicle that tows we check the rating against the towing weight, not just the kerb weight.

Good to know

Do I need to replace all four tyres on a 4x4? On many permanent and automatic four-wheel-drive systems the tread depths must stay closely matched or the drivetrain works constantly against the difference. We measure all four when you arrive and tell you whether one, two or four tyres is right for your vehicle rather than assuming.

Common Fitments We See

Land Rover Defender, Discovery and Range Rover in 18 to 22 inch sizes; Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser; Ford Ranger and Kuga; Nissan Qashqai, X-Trail and Navara; Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg; Kia Sportage and Sorento; Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe; BMW X1 to X5; Mercedes GLA to GLE; Volvo XC40 to XC90; Mitsubishi L200 and Outlander. Premium 4x4s often came from the factory on a manufacturer-approved fitment and our brand pages for Continental, Pirelli and Michelin explain what those sidewall markings mean.

Fitting, Balancing and Alignment on Bigger Wheels

Large SUV wheels and tyres are heavy, and a small imbalance that would be invisible on a 15-inch wheel is a steering shake at 60 mph on a 20-inch one. Every tyre we fit is balanced on a modern machine with the correct weights for the rim, and torqued to the manufacturer figure rather than gunned on. SUVs are also hard on alignment because of their weight and the kerbs and potholes they meet, so if the old tyres show shoulder wear we recommend a four-wheel alignment at the same time to protect the new set. All work carries our 3-month / 3,000-mile workmanship guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to replace all four tyres on a 4x4?

On many permanent and automatic four-wheel-drive systems the tread depths must stay closely matched or the drivetrain works constantly against the difference. We measure all four when you arrive and tell you whether one, two or four tyres is right for your vehicle rather than assuming.

What is the difference between SUV tyres and car tyres?

SUV tyres carry higher load ratings and stiffer constructions for the extra weight and height. Fitting a tyre with too low a load index on an SUV is unsafe and can be illegal for the vehicle weight, so we check the rating against the vehicle plate.

Should I fit all-terrain tyres to my pickup?

If it genuinely goes on tracks, fields or sites, yes. If it lives on tarmac, a highway-terrain tyre will be quieter, grip better in the wet and last longer. We will ask how you use the truck before recommending a pattern.

Can you fit 20 and 22 inch SUV tyres?

Yes. Large diameter and low profile 4x4 sizes are routine for us, including run-flat and manufacturer-approved fitments on premium models. Call with the size or registration and we will confirm stock or lead time.

Do you fit tyres on 4x4s used for towing?

Yes, and we check the load rating against the towing weight rather than just the kerb weight. See our caravan and trailer tyres page if the caravan needs attention too.
