Performance Tyres Norwich

Ultra-high-performance and low profile tyres for hot hatches, sports saloons and premium cars, including the manufacturer-approved versions your car was signed off with.

A performance tyre is the only part of a fast car that touches the road, and the difference between a good one and a cheap one in the same size is measured in metres of stopping distance and in how the car feels through the first roundabout. We supply and fit ultra-high-performance tyres from the brands that make them best, Michelin Pilot Sport, Pirelli P Zero, Continental SportContact, Bridgestone Potenza and Goodyear Eagle F1, and we check the sidewall of what is coming off for an approval marking before we order what goes on. Golf GTI and R, Focus ST and RS, BMW M cars, AMG Mercedes, Audi S and RS models and Porsche all come through Ber Street.

Approved Fitments: The Markings That Matter

Premium and performance cars are often developed around a specific tyre, and the manufacturer then sells an approved version marked on the sidewall: a star for BMW and MINI, MO and MOE for Mercedes-Benz, AO and RO1 for Audi, N0 to N4 codes for Porsche, and others. The approved tyre can differ in compound and construction from the standard tyre of the same name. Fitting the standard version is legal and safe, but on some cars the ride and steering feel change noticeably. Our brand pages for Pirelli, Continental and Michelin go into the markings by manufacturer. Give us the registration and we will tell you whether your car calls for one.

Low Profile Tyres on Norfolk Roads

A 35 or 30 series tyre on a 19 or 20 inch wheel looks right and sharpens steering response, but it has very little sidewall to absorb the potholes on the B1108 out to Hingham or the speed cushions in Eaton and Sprowston. Kerbed and cracked alloys, sidewall bulges from pothole strikes and TPMS warnings after a cold snap are the everyday consequences. We fit low profile tyres properly, with equipment that protects the rim, check the wheel for damage while the tyre is off, and balance to fine tolerances because a 20 inch wheel shows every gram at 70 mph. If you have hit something hard, our pothole damage guide explains what to look for.

Grip vs Wear: An Honest Trade

The compound that makes a tyre grip in the dry also wears quickly, and ultra-high-performance tyres on a heavy, powerful car can be worn out in well under 10,000 miles if driven hard. That is not a fault; it is the design. If you want longer life with most of the performance, the sport-touring tier, Pilot Sport 4 rather than Cup 2, P Zero rather than Trofeo, is the answer for a road car. If the car sees track days, tell us and we will talk about the compound that suits both. We would rather you knew the wear rate before you buy than found it out at the next check.

Good to know

Do I have to fit the manufacturer-approved tyre? No, it is not a legal requirement, but on many premium and performance cars the approved version (star, MO, AO, N-code) is what the suspension and stability control were tuned around, and the standard tyre can ride and steer differently. Give us the registration and we will tell you whether your car specifies one and quote both.

Staggered Fitments and Directional Tyres

Many performance cars run wider tyres at the rear than the front (a staggered fitment), which means tyres cannot be rotated front to rear and the rears usually wear first. Directional and asymmetric tyres must be fitted the right way round, with the rotation arrow or the OUTSIDE marking respected; a directional tyre fitted backwards aquaplanes early and wears oddly. We fit and check all of this as routine, and we torque wheel bolts to the manufacturer figure rather than gunning them, which matters on the alloy wheels these cars wear.

Fitting at Ber Street

Approved and unusual performance sizes are not always on the shelf, so call with the registration and we will confirm what is same day and what is a short order. Fitting includes fine balancing, new valves or a TPMS sensor check, torque-checked bolts and disposal, backed by our 3-month / 3,000-mile workmanship guarantee. A four-wheel alignment is worth doing with new performance tyres: a small toe error scrubs an expensive shoulder off in a few thousand miles. Open seven days, free parking on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fit the manufacturer-approved tyre?

No, it is not a legal requirement, but on many premium and performance cars the approved version (star, MO, AO, N-code) is what the suspension and stability control were tuned around, and the standard tyre can ride and steer differently. Give us the registration and we will tell you whether your car specifies one and quote both.

Why do my performance tyres wear so quickly?

The soft compound that gives dry grip wears fast, especially on a heavy, powerful car driven hard, and staggered fitments cannot be rotated. If you want longer life, the sport-touring tier of the same brand gives up a little ultimate grip for considerably more mileage.

Can you fit 19 and 20 inch low profile tyres without marking my alloys?

Yes. We use equipment designed for low profile tyres on alloy rims and check the wheel for cracks and buckles while the tyre is off, because pothole damage on low profile fitments is common on Norfolk roads.

Do you fit tyres for track days?

We fit road-legal track-focused tyres such as Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Pirelli Trofeo R where the size is available. Tell us how the car is used and we will recommend the right compound for road and track.

Can you fit Pirelli P Zero or Michelin Pilot Sport today?

Common sizes are often same day; approved and unusual sizes are usually a short order. Call 07933 900901 with the registration and we will confirm.
