What 195/60 R15 Means

Three figures, three facts. 195: the tyre is 195 mm across the tread. 60: the sidewall stands 60 per cent of that width, roughly 117 mm. R15: radial construction on a 15-inch wheel. Multiply it out and the tyre is about 615 mm tall overall, which is why a different profile on the same rim is not a like-for-like swap: it changes the gearing, the speedometer and the space in the arch.

Load and Speed Ratings on 195/60 R15

On this size you will typically see 88H, 88V and 88T. The number is the load index (how much weight each tyre may carry) and the letter is the speed rating. Your car's requirement is on the door-jamb label or in the handbook; you may go higher on either but never lower. Where the label asks for the higher load index, that means an XL (reinforced) tyre, and fitting the standard version is a genuine safety error on a loaded car.
