225/40 R18 Tyres Norwich
Which cars use 225/40 R18, what the codes after it mean, and how to choose between the brands, from the garage that fits it every week.
225/40 R18 is one of the two or three most searched-for tyre sizes in Britain, and this page is the plain-English version of what we tell customers on the phone: which cars run it, what the load and speed codes after it mean, how the brands compare in this size, and what to watch for. Call 07933 900901 with the size or your registration and we will quote and book you in, seven days a week.
Which Cars Use 225/40 R18?
The classic hot-hatch and sports-trim size. It is the factory fitment on the Golf GTI and Golf R, the Audi A3 S line and S3, Skoda Octavia vRS, SEAT Leon FR and Cupra, Ford Focus ST-Line and older Focus ST, Mercedes A-Class and CLA AMG Line, and on the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series in run-flat form. A great many ordinary hatchbacks now wear it on optional 18-inch alloys too.
If your car is on this list, check the sidewall anyway; if it is not, check the sidewall anyway. Trims and wheel options vary, and the door label settles it.
What 225/40 R18 Means
225 mm wide. 40 per cent aspect ratio, so a sidewall of about 90 mm. 18-inch wheel, radial build. Overall diameter close to 637 mm. Those are the four facts in the size, and the fourth is the reason the size is fixed for your car rather than negotiable: change it and the speedometer, the gearing and the arch clearance change with it.

Load and Speed Ratings on 225/40 R18
Expect to see 92Y XL and 92W XL on tyres in this size. The load index and speed rating are legal minimums set by the car maker, not suggestions, and they differ between engines and trims of the same model, which is why we check by registration rather than by copying whatever is on the car now. XL versions carry a higher load index for heavier variants and are usually inflated to a higher pressure.
Why do my 225/40 R18 tyres keep getting damaged? The 40-profile sidewall is short, so potholes and kerbs reach the rim more easily. Correct pressures (this size is usually XL and needs the higher figure) and avoiding the worst of the road surface are the only real defences. We check the rim for cracks whenever we see a bulge.
What to Watch For on This Size
A 40-profile sidewall is short, which is why this size feels sharp and why it suffers on Norfolk's potholes and speed cushions: sidewall bulges, cracked alloys and buckled rims are a weekly sight on 225/40 R18 fitments. Almost everything in this size is XL (reinforced) rated, and it should stay that way. Most fitments need a W or Y speed rating. If your car came on run-flats and you have no spare, replacing with run-flats keeps the get-you-home ability; we explain the trade-offs on our run flat page.

Brands Available in 225/40 R18
A performance size, so the premium ranges dominate: Michelin Pilot Sport, Continental SportContact, Goodyear Eagle F1, Pirelli P Zero and Bridgestone Potenza, with Falken Azenis, Hankook Ventus and Nexen N'Fera as strong mid-range options and Davanti Protoura and Accelera at the budget end.
Each brand has its own page explaining who makes it and who it suits; the full brand list is tiered honestly. On the phone we quote two or three options in your size with the EU label for each, so you can weigh wet grip and noise against price.
