Wheel options change everything, so a model on this list may run a different size on its larger alloys. The door-jamb label is the reference; we will check it by registration if you prefer.

What 255/35 R19 Means

Think of the size as width, height and wheel. 255 mm wide, a sidewall 35 per cent of that (call it 89 mm), on a 19-inch rim, R for radial. The overall diameter comes out near 661 mm. Everything the car does with its wheels, from the speedometer to the stability control, assumes that figure, so the size is not a preference but a specification.

What to Watch For on This Size

A 96 XL load index and a Y speed rating throughout. On staggered cars the rear 255/35 must match the front (usually 225/40 R19) in pattern and ideally age. The 35 profile is fragile on Norfolk potholes; pressures must be held at the XL figure and a cracked rim should be suspected after any hard impact. These are expensive tyres to replace in pairs, which is one more reason to keep the geometry right.
