What 235/40 R18 Means

Three figures, three facts. 235: the tyre is 235 mm across the tread. 40: the sidewall stands 40 per cent of that width, roughly 94 mm. R18: radial construction on a 18-inch wheel. Multiply it out and the tyre is about 645 mm tall overall, which is why a different profile on the same rim is not a like-for-like swap: it changes the gearing, the speedometer and the space in the arch.

Load and Speed Ratings on 235/40 R18

Typical markings after the size are 95Y XL and 91Y. Treat the load index as the tyre's payload rating and the speed letter as its ceiling: the car maker sets a minimum for each and you may exceed either but not undercut it. On heavier trims the label will call for the XL figure, and that is the tyre to fit even if the lighter version is cheaper.
