Tyre Sizes: Find Yours and What Fits It
Thirty-four sizes cover most of the cars and vans on Norfolk roads. Each has its own page: the cars that use it, what the codes mean, what to watch for and which brands make it.
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall as three numbers, for example 205/55 R16, followed by a load index and a speed rating, for example 91V. The same size is also on the label inside the driver's door, which is the one to trust if a previous owner fitted something odd. Find your size below for the page that explains it, or give us the registration on 07933 900901 and we will look up the approved sizes for your car.
How to Read a Tyre Size
Take 205/55 R16 91V. 205 is the tread width in millimetres. 55 is the profile: the sidewall height as a percentage of the width. R16 is radial construction on a 16-inch wheel. 91 is the load index, the weight each tyre may carry, and V is the speed rating. A C after the rim size marks a commercial tyre for vans, and XL marks a reinforced tyre with a higher load index. Our sidewall guide covers the rest of the markings, including the date code.

Load Index and Speed Rating
The two codes after the size are legal minimums set by the manufacturer for your exact car. You may fit a higher load index or speed rating; you may never fit a lower one, and doing so is an MOT failure and an insurance problem. They vary between engines and trims of the same model, which is why we check by registration rather than copying what is on the car. Common speed ratings are T (118 mph), H (130), V (149), W (168) and Y (186).
Can I Change Size?
Only to a size the manufacturer approves for your car. Changing width or profile changes the overall diameter, which affects the speedometer, the gearing, the ABS and stability control calibration, and the clearance to the arches and suspension. Many cars have two or three approved sizes for different wheel options, and moving between them with the matching wheels is fine; moving to anything else is not. We check the approved list for you.

Tyre Size Questions
Where do I find my tyre size?
On the sidewall of the tyre, as three numbers such as 205/55 R16, and on the tyre pressure label inside the driver’s door or fuel flap. If the two disagree, trust the label and call us.
What do the letters after the size mean?
The number is the load index (weight each tyre may carry) and the letter is the speed rating. Both are minimums set by the manufacturer for your car.
Can I fit a wider tyre for more grip?
Only if the manufacturer lists that size as approved for your wheels. Otherwise it changes the diameter and clearance and can cause rubbing and calibration problems.
My size is not on this page. Can you still fit it?
Yes. These are the 34 most common sizes; we fit every car, van and 4x4 size. Call with the size or registration.
