How Much Does Tyre Fitting Cost?

The tyre is most of the bill and its price is decided by size, speed rating and brand tier. Fitting should be a small, fixed part of it. Here is how to read a quote.

At Norwich Tyres & Auto Service tyres start from £40, and the rest of this guide explains what moves the price above that. Nobody can tell you what a tyre costs without knowing the size, because a 155/65 R14 for a city car and a 275/35 R20 for a performance SUV are different products from different factories at very different prices. What we can tell you is exactly what goes into the number, so that when you ring us, or anyone else, with the size off your sidewall, you can see whether the quote is fair and what, if anything, is being added on. Read the size first: it is printed on the tyre in the form 205/55 R16 91V.

The Tyre: Size, Rating and Brand Tier

  • Size. Wider, taller-walled and larger-diameter tyres cost more. Sizes fitted to millions of cars (the Focus, Golf, Qashqai and Corsa sizes) are cheaper than rare ones because of volume.
  • Speed and load rating. A V or W rated tyre costs more than a T rated one in the same size; an XL load rating costs more than a standard one. The rating your car needs is on the door pillar or in the handbook and is not optional.
  • Brand tier. Budget, mid-range (Hankook, Kumho, Falken, Yokohama) and premium (Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear) sit at rising price points. Our cheap tyres page explains what each tier buys you.
  • Special constructions. Run-flats, manufacturer-approved fitments, EV-specific tyres and foam-lined acoustic tyres all cost more than the standard version.

What Fitting Should Include

At our workshop the fitting price includes removing the old tyre, fitting the new one, computerised wheel balancing with the correct weights, a new rubber valve, torque-checked wheel nuts and disposal of the old tyre. Those are not extras and should not appear as separate lines on a quote. If a quote looks cheap, check whether balancing, a valve and disposal are being added afterwards; that is the commonest way a headline price grows.

The Genuine Extras

Some things do add to the bill, legitimately, and a good garage will tell you before the wheel comes off:

  • TPMS sensor valves. Cars with tyre pressure sensors in the wheel have a metal sensor valve rather than a rubber one; if it is corroded or broken it needs replacing and programming.
  • Locking wheel nut removal when the key is lost or damaged.
  • Wheel alignment if the old tyres wore unevenly, which protects the new ones; see the wheel alignment cost guide.
  • Corroded wheels that need cleaning to seal a new tyre, or a damaged rim that needs attention before it will hold air.
Good to know

How much does it cost to fit one tyre? The tyre is most of the cost and depends on size, speed rating and brand tier. Fitting, balancing, a new valve and disposal are included in our price rather than added on. Read the size off the sidewall and call for an exact figure.

Repair, Part Worn or New

Before buying a tyre, ask whether you need one. A nail in the central three-quarters of the tread is usually a puncture repair to the BS AU 159 standard, at a fraction of the price of a tyre. A safety-checked part worn tyre is the lowest outlay for a second car. And if only one tyre is worn, one tyre matched to its partner on the axle is the right buy, not a set of four.

Tyre Fitting Cost Questions

How much does it cost to fit one tyre?

The tyre is most of the cost and depends on size, speed rating and brand tier. Fitting, balancing, a new valve and disposal are included in our price rather than added on. Read the size off the sidewall and call for an exact figure.

Is it cheaper to buy tyres online and have them fitted?

Sometimes on the tyre price, but you then pay separately for fitting, balancing and disposal, and you carry the risk of ordering the wrong size or rating. Ask for our all-in quote for the same tyre before you decide; it is often closer than it looks.

Why is my tyre size so expensive?

Large diameter, low profile and high speed-rated tyres cost more to make and sell in smaller numbers. Run-flat, approved-fitment and EV-specific tyres add to that. Common hatchback sizes are the cheapest because of volume.

Do you charge extra for balancing and valves?

No. Computerised balancing, a new rubber valve, torque-checked wheel nuts and disposal are included with every tyre we fit. TPMS sensor valves and locking nut removal are the genuine extras and are quoted first.

Can I get a price over the phone?

Yes. Give us the size from the sidewall or the registration and we will quote the options in one call on 07933 900901.
