How Much Does an Alternator Replacement Cost?

The alternator is one of those parts where the same job can be cheap on one car and expensive on the next. Here is why, how to be sure it is the alternator at all, and how to get a quote you can trust.

The alternator keeps the battery charged and powers the car's electrics while the engine runs. When it fails you get a battery warning light, dimming headlights, a car that starts fine after a charge and dies again a day later, or a whine that rises with engine speed. What it costs to replace depends on three things: the price of the unit for your particular car, how hard it is to reach, and whether the fault is actually the alternator at all. This guide sets out all three so you understand a quote before you agree it.

What Decides the Price

  • The unit itself. A basic alternator for a small petrol hatchback is a modest part. A high-output unit for a diesel SUV with a start-stop system, a smart charging alternator controlled by the engine computer, or a water-cooled alternator on some premium cars costs several times as much. The badge and the engine decide this more than anything.
  • New, remanufactured or used. A quality remanufactured alternator is usually the best value on an older car and carries a warranty. A genuine new unit is dearer; a scrapyard unit is a gamble we do not recommend on a part that strands you when it fails.
  • Access. On many cars the alternator sits on top of the engine and is out in under an hour. On others it is buried under the inlet manifold or behind the engine mount, and the labour is the bigger half of the bill.
  • What comes with it. The auxiliary belt and tensioner are usually replaced at the same time if worn, and a flat battery that has been deep-cycled by a failing alternator may need replacing too.
  • Smart charging systems. Some cars need the new alternator or the battery registered to the car's computer with diagnostic equipment; that is part of a proper job, not an extra.

Is It Actually the Alternator?

Half the "my alternator has gone" calls we take turn out to be something else: a battery that is simply worn out, a corroded earth strap, a slipping or snapped auxiliary belt, a failed battery current sensor, or a wiring fault. Replacing an alternator that was fine is the most expensive way to find that out. We test the charging system properly first: battery condition, charging voltage under load, ripple, belt and tensioner condition, and the wiring. Read the alternator faults guide for the symptoms, and see alternator and starter motor repair for how we do the work.

The False Economies

  • Driving on. A failing alternator flattens the battery, the battery gets deep-cycled and damaged, and the job grows from one part to two.
  • The cheapest unit online. Unbranded alternators fail early and take the belt or the battery with them. A warranted remanufactured unit is the sensible saving.
  • Skipping the belt. If the belt or tensioner is worn, it is far cheaper to do it while the alternator is off.
  • Not registering a smart-charge battery. The car then charges the new battery wrongly and shortens its life.
Good to know

Why does an alternator cost so much more on some cars? Higher-output, smart-charging and water-cooled alternators cost several times more than a basic unit, and on some engines the labour to reach it is the larger part of the bill.

How We Quote It

Give us the registration and the symptoms. We test the charging system, tell you whether it is the alternator, the battery or something else, and quote the actual job on your car: the unit at the quality you choose, the labour it takes to reach, and any belt, tensioner or battery it needs. Nothing is fitted without your approval, and the work carries our 3-month / 3,000-mile guarantee. Call 07933 900901.

Alternator Cost Questions

Why does an alternator cost so much more on some cars?

Higher-output, smart-charging and water-cooled alternators cost several times more than a basic unit, and on some engines the labour to reach it is the larger part of the bill.

Can I just replace the battery instead?

If the alternator is not charging, a new battery will go flat within days. We test the charging system first so you only pay for the part that has failed.

Is a remanufactured alternator a good idea?

Usually yes on an older car: a quality remanufactured unit carries a warranty and costs less than a genuine new one. We avoid unbranded cheap units.

How long does an alternator replacement take?

From under an hour on an accessible engine to most of a day on one where the alternator is buried. We tell you which yours is when we quote.

Can I drive with the battery light on?

Only as far as the garage, and not far. The car is running on the battery alone and will stop when it is flat, often without warning.
