How Much Does a Cambelt Replacement Cost?

A cambelt change is the one big-ticket service item you cannot skip, and the price is decided by the engine, not the badge. Here is what goes into it, and what happens if you leave it.

The cambelt (timing belt) keeps the engine's valves and pistons in step. It is replaced at a mileage or age interval set by the manufacturer, whichever comes first, and it gives no warning before it snaps. When it does, on most engines the pistons hit the valves and the repair runs to many times the cost of the belt. The cost of changing it in time depends on how the engine is laid out, what is replaced with the belt, and whether the water pump is driven by it. This guide sets out what a proper cambelt quote includes and why the cheapest one is rarely the best.

Key takeaways

  • Many engines use a timing chain instead of a belt.
  • On an interference engine, which is most of them, a snapped belt bends valves and can damage pistons and the head.

What a Proper Cambelt Job Includes

  • The kit, not just the belt. Belt, tensioner and idler pulleys together. A new belt on an old tensioner is a false economy; when the tensioner bearing fails it takes the new belt with it.
  • The water pump, on the majority of engines where the cambelt drives it. The pump sits behind the belt, so replacing it later means paying the labour twice, and a pump that seizes destroys the belt.
  • Coolant, drained and refilled with the correct type when the pump is changed.
  • Auxiliary belt, which usually has to come off and is replaced if worn.
  • Correct timing tools for your engine, and a technician who has done that engine before. A cambelt fitted a tooth out runs badly or destroys the engine.

What Sets the Price

  • Engine layout. A small transverse petrol with the belt on the accessible end is a few hours. A diesel with the engine mount, injection pump and multiple belts in the way is most of a day. V6 engines with two banks are longer still.
  • Whether the pump is belt-driven. Adding the pump raises the parts bill but is almost always the right call.
  • Kit quality. We fit kits from the original equipment makers (Gates, Continental, INA, SKF and the like); an unbranded kit saves a little now and risks the engine.
  • Wet belts. Some modern petrol engines run the cambelt in oil. These have their own shorter intervals, need the specified oil throughout their life, and the replacement is a more involved job.

Belt or Chain?

Many engines use a timing chain instead of a belt. Chains are designed to last the engine's life but stretch and rattle on some engines, especially with missed oil changes; that is a repair, not a service item, and is priced by inspection. Give us the registration and we will tell you which your engine has and, if it is a belt, when it is due. See cambelt replacement in Norwich and the when to change guide.

Good to know

Why does a cambelt quote include a water pump? On most engines the belt drives the pump and the pump sits behind it. Doing them together saves paying the same labour twice, and a seized pump would destroy the new belt.

What a Snapped Belt Costs Instead

On an interference engine, which is most of them, a snapped belt bends valves and can damage pistons and the head. The repair means the cylinder head coming off at the least, often a replacement head or engine, and on an older car it usually writes the car off. Compared with that, the scheduled cambelt change is the cheapest insurance the car will ever have. Age matters as much as mileage: a low-mileage car with a ten-year-old belt is at risk too.

Cambelt Cost Questions

Why does a cambelt quote include a water pump?

On most engines the belt drives the pump and the pump sits behind it. Doing them together saves paying the same labour twice, and a seized pump would destroy the new belt.

How often should a cambelt be changed?

At the manufacturer's mileage or age interval, whichever comes first, typically somewhere between 4 and 10 years depending on the engine. We check yours by registration.

What happens if a cambelt snaps?

On most engines the valves hit the pistons and the repair costs many times the belt change, often more than an older car is worth.

How long does a cambelt replacement take?

From a few hours on an accessible petrol engine to a full day on a diesel or V6. We tell you when we quote.

Does my car have a cambelt or a chain?

It depends on the engine. Give us the registration and we will tell you, along with the interval if it is a belt.
