How Much Does Wheel Alignment Cost?
A front tracking adjustment and a full four-wheel geometry set-up are different jobs at different prices. Knowing which your car needs is most of the answer.
Wheel alignment is one of the cheapest jobs in the workshop and one of the most valuable, because a small error in the angle of a wheel can scrub the shoulder off a new tyre in a few thousand miles. The price depends mainly on whether your car needs a front tracking adjustment or a full four-wheel alignment, and then on how adjustable the car is and whether anything is seized. Here is how to tell the difference and what to expect.
Key takeaways
- A tyre with the toe out by a couple of millimetres is dragged sideways a little with every rotation and can lose a third or more of its life.
- We use laser alignment equipment, measure all four wheels against the manufacturer's data and give you a before-and-after report so you can see what changed.
Tracking vs Four-Wheel Alignment
- Front tracking (toe adjustment): sets the front wheels parallel, or to the manufacturer's slight toe-in or toe-out. It is the adjustment most cars need after a kerb strike or new front tyres, and the quickest and cheapest.
- Four-wheel laser alignment: measures toe, camber and where possible caster on all four wheels against the manufacturer's figures and adjusts everything that is adjustable. Needed when the rear is out (the car crabs, or the steering wheel is off-centre even after front tracking), on cars with independent rear suspension, and after suspension work. Takes longer and costs more.
Our what is wheel alignment guide explains toe, camber and caster in plain English.
What Changes the Price
- How adjustable the car is. Some cars adjust front toe only; others adjust camber and rear toe with eccentric bolts or shims. More adjustment points, more time.
- Seized adjusters. Track rod ends and adjusting sleeves that have not moved for ten years may need heat and effort to free, or replacing. A good garage tells you before the invoice.
- Worn parts. Alignment cannot be set accurately on worn ball joints, bushes or track rod ends; they need replacing first, and that is a separate quoted job.
- Steering angle sensor reset. Cars with stability control may need the sensor recalibrated after alignment, which needs diagnostic equipment.

When You Actually Need It
After a pothole or kerb strike; when the car pulls to one side on a flat road; when the steering wheel sits off-centre; when a front tyre wears on one edge; after new tyres if the old ones wore unevenly; and after any steering or suspension repair. Not every vibration is alignment: a shake through the wheel at speed is usually balancing, which is a different and cheaper job. Our guide to the signs your wheels are out of alignment helps you tell them apart.
How much is wheel alignment in the UK? It depends on whether the car needs a front tracking adjustment or a full four-wheel alignment, how adjustable the car is and whether any adjusters are seized. What It Saves
A tyre with the toe out by a couple of millimetres is dragged sideways a little with every rotation and can lose a third or more of its life. On a set of premium tyres that is the alignment paid for several times over, before counting the fuel a misaligned car wastes and the tyre noise it makes. Fitting new tyres without correcting the alignment that wore out the old ones is the most expensive way to run a car that we see.

Wheel Alignment Cost Questions
How much is wheel alignment in the UK?
It depends on whether the car needs a front tracking adjustment or a full four-wheel alignment, how adjustable the car is and whether any adjusters are seized. Front tracking is the quicker, cheaper job; four-wheel alignment takes longer. Call with the registration and symptom for a quote.
Is wheel alignment the same as wheel balancing?
No. Alignment sets the angles of the wheels relative to the car and road and fixes pulling and uneven wear. Balancing corrects weight distribution around the wheel and fixes vibration at speed. They are separate jobs and are often confused.
How often should I get my wheels aligned?
Whenever you hit a pothole or kerb hard, when the car pulls or the wheel is off-centre, after new tyres if the old ones wore unevenly, and after suspension work. Many drivers have it checked once a year with the service.
Does alignment cost more on a 4x4 or a premium car?
It can, because these cars often have more adjustment points, larger wheels and stability systems that need a steering angle sensor reset afterwards. The check itself is the same principle.
Will alignment fix a vibration at 60 mph?
Usually not. A speed-related vibration is almost always balancing. Alignment fixes pulling, an off-centre wheel and uneven tyre wear. We will tell you which you need before doing either.
