How Much Does a Car Battery Cost?

The price of a battery is set by its type, and the type is set by your car. Stop-start cars need EFB or AGM batteries that cost more and must be coded to the vehicle.

Twenty years ago a car battery was a car battery and the price varied mainly by size. Now the type is decided by the car, and a stop-start car cannot safely take the cheap battery that fitted its predecessor. The three questions that set the price are: what type does your car need (standard, EFB or AGM), what physical size and capacity, and does the car need the new battery registered to its energy management system. A free battery test answers the first question most drivers actually have, which is whether it needs replacing at all.

Key takeaways

  • Fitting a standard battery to a stop-start car is a false economy: it fails early, often within a year, because it was never designed for the cycling.
  • Within a type, price rises with physical size, amp-hour capacity and cold cranking amps.
  • On many cars built in the last decade the new battery must be registered (coded) to the car's battery management system with diagnostic equipment.
  • A car that will not start on a cold morning does not always need a battery.
  • Free battery and charging test, the correct type fitted and coded where required, usually the same day, and the old battery recycled.

Standard, EFB or AGM

  • Standard flooded lead-acid: for cars without stop-start. The cheapest type.
  • EFB (enhanced flooded battery): for cars with basic stop-start. Built to survive far more discharge cycles. Noticeably dearer than standard.
  • AGM (absorbent glass mat): for cars with stop-start plus regenerative braking, or heavy electrical loads. The most expensive type and the one many premium German cars specify.

Fitting a standard battery to a stop-start car is a false economy: it fails early, often within a year, because it was never designed for the cycling. Fitting an EFB where an AGM is specified is the same problem in milder form. We fit the type the car specifies. Our battery types guide goes into the chemistry.

Size, Capacity and Brand

Within a type, price rises with physical size, amp-hour capacity and cold cranking amps. A big diesel needs far more cranking power on a January morning than a small petrol. Brand matters less than type, but the batteries we fit come with a proper warranty and we will tell you what it is. We check the specification against the vehicle rather than against whatever was in there, because previous owners fit the wrong battery more often than you would think.

Fitting and Battery Registration

On many cars built in the last decade the new battery must be registered (coded) to the car's battery management system with diagnostic equipment. Skipping it means the car keeps charging as if the old, tired battery were still fitted, which shortens the life of the new one and can stop the stop-start working. Fitting can also involve keeping the car's memory alive during the swap so radio codes and settings survive. Both are part of the job with us, not extras discovered afterwards.

Good to know

How much is a new car battery fitted? It depends on the type your car specifies (standard, EFB for stop-start, AGM for stop-start with regenerative braking or high electrical loads), the size and capacity, and whether it needs coding to the car. Give us the registration and we will quote the correct battery fitted.

Battery or Alternator?

A car that will not start on a cold morning does not always need a battery. If the battery light stays on while driving, the headlights dim at idle or a new battery goes flat within weeks, the alternator or the charging system is the fault and a battery would only mask it briefly. We test the battery, the charging voltage and the drain before recommending anything, because replacing a good battery is money wasted and replacing it without finding the drain means doing it again. Our cold-start guide explains the symptoms.

Car Battery Cost Questions

How much is a new car battery fitted?

It depends on the type your car specifies (standard, EFB for stop-start, AGM for stop-start with regenerative braking or high electrical loads), the size and capacity, and whether it needs coding to the car. Give us the registration and we will quote the correct battery fitted.

Why are stop-start batteries more expensive?

EFB and AGM batteries are built to survive constant discharge and recharge cycles that would kill a standard battery within months. The construction costs more, and the car will not work properly with the cheaper type.

Do new car batteries need to be coded?

On many cars built in the last ten years, yes. The battery management system needs to know a new battery is fitted or it will charge it wrongly and shorten its life. We register it as part of the fitting.

How long should a car battery last?

Typically three to five years, less on a car doing short journeys that never fully recharge it. A free test tells you how much life is left before winter.

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?

A battery light on while driving, dimming lights at idle or a new battery going flat quickly point to the alternator or a drain. We test the battery and the charging system together so you replace only what is actually faulty.
