How Much Is an MOT?

The MOT test fee is capped by law, so the number you should worry about is not the test but the repairs behind a fail. Here is the full picture, with the current figures.

An MOT for a car can cost no more than £54.85. That is the maximum fee set by the DVSA, published on GOV.UK, and no test centre in England, Scotland or Wales may charge more for the test itself. Many charge less, especially when the MOT is booked with a service. What actually decides how much your MOT costs is everything around the test: whether the car fails, what the repairs cost, whether you pay for a retest, and whether you found the problems before or after the tester did. This guide sets all of that out with the current figures.

Key takeaways

  • These are maximums, not fixed prices. A garage may charge less, and many do as part of a service package.
  • The test is an inspection. It does not fix anything.
  • Norwich Tyres & Auto Service is not a DVSA test station.

The Maximum MOT Fees by Vehicle Class

The fee caps, as published by GOV.UK, are:

  • Cars (class 4, up to 8 passenger seats): £54.85
  • Vans and goods vehicles 3,000 to 3,500 kg (class 7): £58.60
  • Motorcycles (class 1 and 2): £29.65
  • Minibuses with 9 to 12 passenger seats (class 4): £64.00

These are maximums, not fixed prices. A garage may charge less, and many do as part of a service package. There is no VAT added on top: the fee is the fee. Anyone quoting more than the cap for the test alone is either including something else or should be asked why.

What the MOT Fee Does Not Include

The test is an inspection. It does not fix anything. If the tester finds a worn brake pad, a bald tyre, a blown bulb or a split CV boot, the car fails and the repair is a separate job at a separate price, usually at whichever garage you choose. This is where the cost of an MOT actually varies, from nothing at all on a well-kept car to several hundred pounds on a neglected one, and it is why we always recommend a pre-MOT check before the test rather than waiting for the fail sheet.

It also does not include a service. An MOT checks the safety and emissions items on the day; it does not change the oil or replace filters. Our MOT and service page explains why doing both in one visit is the cheapest way to run the year.

When a Retest Is Free

The retest rules are set by GOV.UK and are worth knowing, because a fail need not mean paying the full fee again:

  • Left at the test centre for repair and retested within 10 working days: a partial retest with no fee.
  • Taken away and brought back to the same centre before the end of the next working day, for a defined list of items: no fee. The list includes bonnet, boot lid, doors, fuel filler cap, horn, lamps, mirrors, registration plates, seatbelts (excluding anchorages), seats, steering wheel, tyre pressure monitoring system, windscreen glass, wipers and washers, and wheels and tyres among others.
  • Taken away and brought back within 10 working days for anything else: a partial retest, for which the centre may charge a partial fee.
  • Later than that: a full retest at the full fee.

Because we arrange the test at an approved centre and do the repairs ourselves, we work inside these windows so that a fail on, say, a tyre or a bulb becomes a same-day fix and a free retest rather than a second full fee.

Good to know

How much is an MOT in 2026? The legal maximum for a car is £54.85, for a class 7 van £58.60, for a motorcycle £29.65 and for a 9 to 12 seat minibus £64, as published by GOV.UK. Centres may charge less. Repairs and any service are separate.

What Fails Cars, and What It Tends to Cost

The DVSA's failure statistics are consistent from year to year. Lighting and signalling is the single biggest category, followed by suspension, brakes, tyres and driver's view of the road (wipers, washers, windscreen). The cost of fixing them ranges from trivial to serious:

  • Bulbs, wipers, washer fluid, number plate lamps: minutes and pennies, and the most avoidable fails of all.
  • Tyres: the cost of a tyre in your size; see our tyre fitting cost guide.
  • Brake pads and discs: brake pads from around £60 per axle fitted at our workshop, more if discs are needed; see the brake pads cost guide.
  • Suspension: a drop link or bush is a small job, a pair of shock absorbers is a bigger one.
  • Emissions and warning lights: a lit engine management light is a fail in itself, and the cost depends entirely on the fault behind it.

How to Keep the Total Down

  1. Check the easy things yourself: every bulb, the horn, wipers, washers, tread depth with the 20p test, and whether any dashboard warning light is on.
  2. Book early. You can have the MOT done up to a month minus a day before expiry and keep the same renewal date, which leaves time for repairs without the car going off the road.
  3. Have a pre-MOT check, or combine the MOT with the service, so problems are found on a ramp rather than on a test sheet.
  4. Ask for the quote before the repair. A fail sheet is not authorisation to fix everything on it. Advisories in particular can often wait.

How We Handle MOTs at Ber Street

Norwich Tyres & Auto Service is not a DVSA test station. We carry out a pre-MOT inspection and any repairs in our own workshop, arrange and present the car for its test at a trusted approved centre nearby, and arrange the retest where one is needed, so you deal with one garage and get one quote. The test fee is passed on at the centre's rate, never above the cap, and every repair is quoted to you before it is done. Our MOT Norwich page has the detail. Call 07933 900901 to book.

MOT Cost Questions

How much is an MOT in 2026?

The legal maximum for a car is £54.85, for a class 7 van £58.60, for a motorcycle £29.65 and for a 9 to 12 seat minibus £64, as published by GOV.UK. Centres may charge less. Repairs and any service are separate.

Is the MOT fee the same everywhere?

No. The figures are maximums. Any test centre may charge less than the cap, and many do when the MOT is booked with a service. None may charge more for the test itself.

Do I pay again if my car fails the MOT?

Not always. Under GOV.UK rules, a car left at the test centre and retested within 10 working days needs only a partial retest with no fee, and certain items retested at the same centre by the end of the next working day are also free. Otherwise a partial retest fee, or after 10 working days the full fee, applies.

Can I drive my car if it fails the MOT?

Only if the previous MOT certificate is still valid and the failure did not include a dangerous defect, and even then only to a pre-booked test or repair. If the old certificate has expired or a defect was marked dangerous, you may not drive it except to a pre-arranged test or repair appointment.

Is it cheaper to get an MOT with a service?

Usually, and not only because of package pricing: the service catches the wear that fails cars, so you avoid a fail, a repair visit and a retest. See our MOT and service page for how the day runs.
