How Much Do Brake Pads Cost?
Brake pads fitted from around £60 per axle at Ber Street. The bill goes up when the discs are worn too, and that is the thing worth understanding before you get a quote.
Brake pads are one of the few jobs where we publish a starting price: pads fitted from around £60 per axle at our Ber Street workshop. Whether your car lands near that figure or well above it depends on three things: what car it is, whether the discs need replacing at the same time, and whether anything else in the braking system, a sticking calliper, a wear sensor, a perished hose, has been letting go quietly. A free visual brake check answers all three before you commit to anything.
Key takeaways
- Discs wear more slowly than pads, but they do wear, and every disc has a minimum thickness stamped on it below which it must be replaced.
- A sticking calliper slider or piston makes one pad wear far faster than the other and will destroy new pads if not freed or replaced.
- Free visual brake check first: pad thickness, disc condition and measurement, callipers, hoses, fluid and handbrake.
Pads Alone: What Moves the Price
- The car. Pads for a small hatchback cost less than pads for a heavy SUV or a performance car with large callipers. Premium German cars often have larger pads and wear sensors.
- Front or rear. Front pads do most of the work and wear first; rear pads on cars with an electronic parking brake need the calliper put into service mode with diagnostic equipment, which adds time.
- Pad quality. We fit quality OEM-specification pads as standard. Budget pads can be noisier, dustier and shorter-lived; genuine pads on some premium cars are worth the extra. We will say which applies.
- Wear sensors. Many cars have a sensor embedded in the pad that triggers the dashboard warning. It is renewed with the pads.
When the Discs Need Doing Too
Discs wear more slowly than pads, but they do wear, and every disc has a minimum thickness stamped on it below which it must be replaced. Discs that are lipped at the edge, scored, warped (felt as a shudder through the pedal or steering) or rusted through the friction surface need replacing, and new pads on a worn disc bed in badly and wear quickly. Discs are typically replaced in pairs across an axle with new pads, which is where a brake job becomes noticeably more expensive than pads alone. We measure the discs during the free check and tell you honestly whether they can be left.

The Hidden Extras
A sticking calliper slider or piston makes one pad wear far faster than the other and will destroy new pads if not freed or replaced. A perished flexible hose, a leaking calliper seal or old brake fluid can all be found during a pad change and all need doing for the brakes to work properly. None of it should be a surprise on the invoice: we quote it before we do it. Our brake fluid guide explains why the fluid is often the forgotten item.
How much does it cost to replace brake pads? At our Norwich workshop brake pads are fitted from around £60 per axle. Larger, heavier and premium cars cost more, and the bill rises if the discs need replacing at the same time. A free brake check tells you which applies before you commit.
The Warning Signs
- A high-pitched squeal when braking: usually the wear indicator tab touching the disc. Pads are due.
- A grinding, metal-on-metal noise: the pad has worn through to the backing plate and the disc is being damaged. Stop driving on it; the bill grows daily.
- A pull to one side under braking: often a sticking calliper.
- A shudder or pulsing pedal: warped or unevenly worn discs.
- A brake warning light: the pad wear sensor, low fluid, or a fault. Have it checked.
Our brake warning signs guide covers each in more depth.
How We Quote Brakes
Free visual brake check first: pad thickness, disc condition and measurement, callipers, hoses, fluid and handbrake. Then a written quote with the pads, and the discs only if they genuinely need it. Brake Pads Cost Questions
How much does it cost to replace brake pads?
At our Norwich workshop brake pads are fitted from around £60 per axle. Larger, heavier and premium cars cost more, and the bill rises if the discs need replacing at the same time. A free brake check tells you which applies before you commit.
Do I need to replace discs with pads?
Only if the discs are below their minimum thickness, lipped, scored, warped or corroded. Discs wear more slowly than pads, so often the answer is no. We measure them during the free check and say honestly.
How long do brake pads last?
Typically 25,000 to 60,000 miles depending on the car and how it is driven. Stop-start urban driving wears them fastest. Our guide on how long brake pads and discs last has the detail.
Can I drive with grinding brakes?
You should not. Grinding means the pad has worn to the metal and is damaging the disc, turning a pads-only job into pads and discs. Have it looked at straight away.
Is a free brake check really free?
Yes. We inspect pads, discs, callipers, hoses, fluid and handbrake and give you a written report and quote. There is no obligation to have the work done with us.
