How Much Does Suspension Repair Cost?
"Suspension repair" covers everything from a ten-minute drop link to a full set of struts, which is why nobody can price a knock over the phone. Here is what the common jobs involve and what moves the price.
Norfolk's potholes, speed cushions and salted winter roads are hard on suspension, and a knock over bumps is one of the most common reasons cars come to Ber Street. The cost of fixing it ranges enormously, because the same noise can come from a small drop link, a worn bush, a broken spring, a tired damper, a control arm or a top mount. The only honest way to price suspension work is to put the car on the ramp, find the worn component, and quote that job. This guide sets out what the common repairs involve and what decides the cost, so the quote you get makes sense.
The Common Suspension Repairs, Cheapest to Dearest
- Anti-roll bar drop links. The classic rattle over small bumps. Quick to replace, usually in pairs.
- Anti-roll bar bushes. A knock or creak on uneven roads; small parts, though access varies.
- Coil springs. Broken springs are very common on our roads. Replaced in pairs across an axle; on a front strut the spring is compressed and swapped or a complete strut is fitted.
- Shock absorbers and struts. In pairs; see the shock absorber cost guide.
- Top mounts and bearings. A knock on full lock or a notchy steering feel; usually done with the strut.
- Control arms and bushes. Wandering steering, uneven tyre wear, a clunk under braking. On some cars the bush can be pressed in; on many the whole arm is replaced. Ball joints likewise.
- Wheel bearings. A drone rather than a knock; see the wheel bearing cost guide.
- Air suspension on the cars that have it: compressors, struts and sensors, the dearest end of the range.
What Moves the Price
- Which component, above all. A drop link and a control arm are different jobs by an order of magnitude.
- One side or both. Springs and dampers go in pairs; links, arms and bushes can often be done singly if the other side is sound.
- Corrosion. Seized bolts on a salted Norfolk car add time, sometimes considerably.
- Alignment. Any work that disturbs the geometry (arms, struts, springs on some cars) should be followed by a four-wheel alignment or the new parts wear the tyres.
- Part quality. Branded suspension parts (Lemforder, TRW, Meyle HD, Sachs, KYB and the like) last; cheap ones knock again within a year.

Why We Diagnose Before We Quote
A knock is a symptom, not a diagnosis. We road-test, then check every joint, bush, mount, spring and damper on the ramp with the wheels loaded and unloaded, so you pay for the component that is actually worn and not a list of guesses. See suspension and steering repair and the knocking over bumps guide.
Why can't you price a suspension knock over the phone? Because the same knock can be a small drop link or a control arm and strut, and the difference is large. A ramp inspection tells us which, and then the quote is exact.
Suspension and the MOT
Suspension is consistently one of the top MOT failure categories. Broken springs, leaking dampers, excessive play in joints and worn bushes all fail. Having a suspicious noise checked before the test turns a fail and retest into a planned repair. Pothole damage claims are also worth knowing about; see the pothole claims guide.
How We Quote It
Call 07933 900901 with the registration and describe the noise or the handling. We diagnose on the ramp, quote the actual repair with any alignment it needs, and proceed only with your approval. Every repair carries our 3-month / 3,000-mile guarantee.

Suspension Cost Questions
Why can't you price a suspension knock over the phone?
Because the same knock can be a small drop link or a control arm and strut, and the difference is large. A ramp inspection tells us which, and then the quote is exact.
What is the most common suspension repair?
Anti-roll bar drop links and broken coil springs, both common on Norfolk's potholed and salted roads.
Do suspension parts need replacing in pairs?
Springs and dampers, yes, across an axle. Links, arms and bushes can often be replaced singly if the other side is sound.
Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
After anything that disturbs the geometry, such as arms, struts or springs on many cars, yes, or the new parts will wear the tyres.
Is a suspension knock an MOT failure?
It can be. Broken springs, leaking dampers, excessive play in joints and worn bushes all fail the test.
