How Much Does a Car Service Cost?

There is no single price for a service because there is no single service. Here is what moves the number, how the three levels differ, and how to get a quote that will not grow.

Servicing at our Ber Street workshop starts from £90; the sections below explain what moves a quote above that. Ask three garages how much a car service costs and you will get three numbers, and none of them is wrong, because "a service" covers everything from an oil change and a look round to a two-day major with brake fluid, coolant, plugs and filters. The price is decided by four things: which level of service the car needs, what the car is, what the parts and oil cost, and who is doing the work. Understand those and you can compare quotes properly and spot the one that is padded.

Key takeaways

  • A 1.0-litre Fiesta and a 3.0-litre diesel BMW do not cost the same to service and never will.
  • A service invoice is parts plus oil plus labour.
  • Main dealers generally charge the highest labour rates and use genuine parts, and on a car under manufacturer warranty that can be worth paying for.
  • The price that grows between the quote and the invoice is the one people remember.

Interim, Full or Major: The Biggest Factor

  • Interim service (every six months or 6,000 miles for high-mileage drivers): oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, tyre, brake and battery checks and a multi-point inspection. The cheapest level because it is mostly labour and oil.
  • Full service (annually or every 12,000 miles): everything in the interim plus air filter, cabin filter and spark plugs on petrol engines as due, and a proper inspection of brakes, steering, suspension, cooling system and electrics against the manufacturer schedule. The usual annual service.
  • Major service (roughly every two years or 24,000 miles): the full service plus the long-interval items, typically brake fluid, fuel filter and coolant. The dearest level because of the extra parts and time, and the one most often skipped, to the car's cost.

Our interim vs full service guide and what is in a full service set out the checklists item by item.

The Car Itself

A 1.0-litre Fiesta and a 3.0-litre diesel BMW do not cost the same to service and never will. The engine oil capacity can differ by a factor of two, the oil specification can differ in price by as much again, and a filter for a premium German car often costs several times what a Japanese hatchback's does. Diesel cars may need a fuel filter that petrols do not; some engines bury the spark plugs under the inlet manifold and turn a 20-minute job into a two-hour one. When you ring for a quote, the registration lets us look all of that up rather than guess.

Parts, Oil and Labour

A service invoice is parts plus oil plus labour. Parts can be genuine, original-equipment quality from the same manufacturer who supplies the carmaker, or budget aftermarket; we fit quality OEM-specification parts as standard and will say if a genuine part is worth the extra on a particular car. Oil is specified by the manufacturer down to the grade and approval code, and using a cheaper oil that does not carry the approval is a false economy that can void a warranty on a newer car. Labour is the garage's hourly rate multiplied by the book time for your car.

Good to know

How much should a full car service cost? It depends on the car, the oil and parts it needs and who does the work. A small petrol hatchback costs considerably less to service than a large diesel or a premium German car because of oil capacity, oil specification and parts prices. Call us with the registration and we will quote your car specifically.

Dealer, Chain or Independent

Main dealers generally charge the highest labour rates and use genuine parts, and on a car under manufacturer warranty that can be worth paying for. National fast-fit chains advertise low headline prices for a basic service and make their money on the upsell. Independent garages like ours sit in between: lower overheads than a dealer, the same OEM-specification parts and manufacturer schedules, and the same mechanic you spoke to on the phone doing the work. Under the block exemption rules an independent can service a car under warranty provided the schedule and parts specification are followed, and we do.

What Should Never Be Added Without Asking

The price that grows between the quote and the invoice is the one people remember. A service will sometimes turn up wear that needs attention, worn brake pads, a perished belt, a tyre near the limit, and a good garage phones you with a price before touching it. If a quote says "from", ask what would take it above that figure. If an invoice includes work you did not agree to, you are entitled to question it. We quote before we start and we do not add jobs without your approval, which is the single most important thing to know about the cost of a service anywhere.

Car Service Cost Questions

How much should a full car service cost?

It depends on the car, the oil and parts it needs and who does the work. A small petrol hatchback costs considerably less to service than a large diesel or a premium German car because of oil capacity, oil specification and parts prices. Call us with the registration and we will quote your car specifically.

Why is a major service more expensive?

It includes the long-interval items a full service does not: usually brake fluid, fuel filter and coolant, plus the extra labour to do them. It is typically needed every two years or 24,000 miles.

Is it cheaper to service a car at an independent garage?

Usually, because overheads and labour rates are lower than a main dealer while the parts specification and schedule are the same. An independent can service a car under manufacturer warranty provided it follows the schedule and uses parts of the correct specification.

What is included in the price of a service?

It should include the parts, oil and labour for the service level quoted, a written report of anything found, and a reset of the service indicator. Repairs found during the service are extra and should always be quoted before they are done.

How often should I service my car?

Follow the manufacturer schedule, typically a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles with an interim at six months for high-mileage drivers. Our guide on how often to service a car goes into the exceptions.
