Major Service Norwich
Every second year the long-interval items come due. Skipping them is how a well-serviced car ends up with boiled brake fluid and a corroded radiator.
A major service is a full service plus the items that only come due every two years or so: brake fluid, coolant, the fuel filter on a diesel, spark plugs on many petrol engines, and a deeper inspection of the belts, hoses, suspension and steering. They are the jobs that get skipped when a car is only ever given the cheapest service on offer, and they are the ones that cause the expensive failures later, boiled brake fluid on a long descent, a radiator corroded from the inside, a fuel filter that lets a diesel injector fail. At Ber Street we check the schedule for your car and do the items that are actually due, quoted in advance.
What a Major Service Adds to a Full Service
- Brake fluid change, pressure bled through all four corners; see our brake fluid page for why.
- Coolant drain, flush and refill with the correct specification, and the system bled and pressure tested.
- Fuel filter on diesels and on petrol cars that have a serviceable one.
- Spark plugs on petrol engines where the interval falls due (long-life plugs may run longer; we follow the schedule).
- Air filter and cabin filter if not done at the last full service.
- Auxiliary drive belt and tensioner inspected and replaced if worn.
- Gearbox and differential oil levels, and a recommendation on gearbox oil change where the car has an interval.
- A deeper look at suspension bushes, ball joints, wheel bearings, driveshaft boots, exhaust mountings and the underside for corrosion.
The Cambelt Question
A major service is when the cambelt interval should be checked against the mileage and age of the car. It is not part of the service itself, because it is a large job in its own right, but if it is due we will tell you and quote it, and it is often sensible to do them together because the car is already with us. Our cambelt replacement page explains the interval and why the water pump goes with it.

Is It Worth It on an Older Car?
Usually more so, not less. An older car has had more time for the brake fluid to absorb water and the coolant to lose its inhibitors, and the failures those cause, corroded callipers, a leaking radiator, a failed head gasket, cost more than the service by a wide margin. If a car is genuinely at the end of its life we will say so; otherwise the major service is the best money you will spend on it this year.
How often is a major service needed? Typically every two years or 24,000 miles, alternating with full services, though the exact schedule depends on the manufacturer. We check yours by registration and mileage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often is a major service needed?
Typically every two years or 24,000 miles, alternating with full services, though the exact schedule depends on the manufacturer. We check yours by registration and mileage.
What is included in a major service that is not in a full service?
Brake fluid, coolant, fuel filter, spark plugs where due, drive belt inspection and a deeper check of suspension, steering and the underside. The cambelt is quoted separately if it is due.
How long does a major service take?
Usually most of a day. Drop the car in the morning and we call if anything beyond the quoted work needs approval.
Do I need a major service if the car is low mileage?
Yes, because the items in it are time-based: brake fluid absorbs water and coolant degrades whether the car is driven or not. A two-year-old service history with low miles still needs them.
Can I combine a major service with the MOT?
Yes. We service the car, check it against the test items and arrange the MOT at a DVSA-approved centre in the same visit.
