Cooling System Repair and Overheating Norwich
An overheating engine is a head gasket waiting to happen. We pressure test the system, find the leak or the fault, and fix it before it becomes an engine job.
A temperature needle that climbs in traffic on the Norwich ring road, a heater that blows cold on a January morning, a sweet smell after a drive or a puddle under the car in the morning are all the cooling system asking for attention. Ignored, the ending is the same: the engine overheats, the head gasket fails, and a repair that would have been a hose or a thermostat becomes the most expensive job the car will ever have. At Ber Street we pressure test the system to find the fault rather than guess, and we quote the repair before we start.
Finding the Fault
Cooling faults hide. A leak may only show under pressure when the engine is hot, a thermostat may stick only sometimes, a fan may fail only when the air con is off. We pressure test the system cold, check for combustion gases in the coolant, watch the fan cut in, read the temperature sensors with diagnostic equipment and inspect every hose, the radiator core, the expansion tank and the water pump weep hole. That takes longer than topping up the coolant and hoping, and it is the only way to fix it once.
The Usual Suspects
- Hoses and clips: perished, split or rubbing through. The cheapest fix and a common one on older cars.
- Thermostat: stuck open and the engine never warms up (poor heater, poor economy); stuck closed and it overheats fast.
- Water pump: a weeping seal, a noisy bearing or a corroded impeller that no longer moves coolant. Often replaced with the cambelt on engines where the belt drives it.
- Radiator: leaking end tanks, a stone-damaged core or internal blockage. Cars used on Norfolk's gritted roads in winter corrode radiators early.
- Cooling fan and switch: fine at speed, overheats in traffic.
- Expansion tank and cap: a cracked tank or a cap that no longer holds pressure lowers the boiling point of the whole system.
- Head gasket: the one nobody wants. White smoke, a creamy residue under the oil cap, coolant loss with no visible leak. We test for it before anyone spends money elsewhere.

Coolant Itself
Coolant is not just water. It carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the aluminium in the engine and radiator, and antifreeze that keeps it liquid on a Norfolk frost. Both degrade with age, and the wrong type mixed with the right one can gel and block the system. We drain, flush and refill with the specification the manufacturer calls for, bleed the system properly so there are no air locks, and check the freeze protection. It is part of a major service and worth doing on any car over five years old whose coolant has never been changed. Our coolant guide explains the types.
Why is my car losing coolant with no leak? Either it is leaking only under pressure when hot, which a pressure test finds, or it is being burnt inside the engine through a failing head gasket, which a combustion gas test finds. We do both before quoting.
If It Is Overheating Now
Pull over as soon as it is safe, switch the engine off and do not open the expansion cap while it is hot. Let it cool, and if the level is low and you have water, top it up gently and drive to us only if the gauge stays normal; if it climbs again, use your breakdown cover. Ten minutes of driving an overheating engine can cost a head gasket. Our overheating guide covers the causes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my car losing coolant with no leak?
Either it is leaking only under pressure when hot, which a pressure test finds, or it is being burnt inside the engine through a failing head gasket, which a combustion gas test finds. We do both before quoting.
Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the open road?
Usually the cooling fan or its switch or relay is not working, so the radiator only gets airflow when the car is moving. Sometimes a partially blocked radiator. Both are diagnosable and usually inexpensive.
Can I drive with the temperature gauge high?
No. Stop, let it cool and find the cause. A short distance of overheating can fail the head gasket and turn a small repair into a very large one.
How often should coolant be changed?
Follow the manufacturer schedule, typically every few years or as part of a major service. Old coolant loses its corrosion protection and antifreeze strength even if the level looks fine.
Is a head gasket worth repairing?
It depends on the car. On a newer or valuable car, usually yes. On an older car the quote may exceed its value and we will say so honestly rather than start a job you will regret.
