Car Diagnostics Norwich
A warning light tells you something is wrong, not what. We read the codes and the live data, find the cause rather than the symptom, and explain it in plain English before quoting.
Modern cars rarely tell you what is wrong. They put a light on the dashboard, sometimes drop into limp mode, and leave you to guess whether it is a loose fuel cap or a failing turbo. Diagnostics is how we find out. We plug proper diagnostic equipment into the car, read the stored fault codes, the freeze-frame data recorded when the fault happened and the live sensor readings, and then do the part that a code reader cannot: work out what the code actually means on your car, test the suspect component, and quote the repair. Engine management, ABS, airbag, traction control, emissions and DPF warnings on all makes and models, at Ber Street seven days a week.
A Fault Code Is a Clue, Not an Answer
The commonest mistake in diagnostics is reading a code and replacing the part it names. A lambda sensor code can be caused by a failing sensor, but also by an exhaust leak upstream of it, a misfire, a vacuum leak or a wiring fault, and swapping the sensor fixes none of those. Proper diagnostics means using the code to narrow the search, then testing: live data to see what the sensor is actually reporting, a smoke test for a vacuum leak, a scope on a coil pack, a pressure test on the fuel system. It takes longer than plugging in and clearing the light, and it is the difference between fixing the car once and fixing it three times.
The Lights We See Most
- Engine management light: anything from a misfire or a sensor to an EGR valve, a DPF or a fuel-system fault. Solid amber means investigate soon; flashing means stop, because a misfire is being sent through the catalytic converter.
- ABS and traction control: usually a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, sometimes a pump or module.
- Airbag: seat occupancy sensors, wiring under the seats, or a fault in the module. An airbag light is an MOT fail.
- Battery or charging: the alternator or the wiring to it; see our alternator and starter motor page.
- Glow plug, DPF and AdBlue warnings on diesels, which we diagnose and explain honestly, including what is and is not economic to fix.
Our dashboard warning lights guide covers what each symbol means and how urgently to act.

Limp Mode, Poor Running and Intermittent Faults
Not every fault lights a lamp. Rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, a car that cuts out at junctions or one that runs badly only when cold are all diagnosable, and intermittent faults, the ones that clear by the time you reach the garage, are what freeze-frame data and a road test with the equipment connected are for. Tell us when it happens, hot or cold, at speed or idling, and we will reproduce it rather than send you away because the light was off.
How much is a diagnostic check? We quote the diagnostic check when you call, based on the fault, and the repair separately once we know the cause. If we go on to do the repair the diagnosis is part of that job. Call 07933 900901 with the registration and the warning light.
Before the MOT
A lit engine management, ABS or airbag light fails the MOT outright, and clearing the code an hour before the test does not work: the tester checks that the system's readiness monitors have run. If a light is on and the test is due, diagnostics first is the cheap route. See our MOT and service page for doing it all in one visit.
What You Get
A clear explanation of what the fault is and what caused it, a written quote for the repair, and the choice of whether to proceed. If the fix is small we often do it the same day. If it is not economic on the car's age and value we will say so; a diagnosis you can act on is worth more than a repair you regret. Call 07933 900901 with the registration and the light. Open seven days, free parking at 100-106 Ber Street, and every repair carries our 3-month / 3,000-mile workmanship guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a diagnostic check?
We quote the diagnostic check when you call, based on the fault, and the repair separately once we know the cause. If we go on to do the repair the diagnosis is part of that job. Call 07933 900901 with the registration and the warning light.
Can you just clear the warning light?
We can, but it comes back if the fault is still there, and clearing it before an MOT does not help because the tester checks that the systems have completed their self-checks. Finding the cause is the only fix.
My engine management light is flashing. What should I do?
Stop driving as soon as it is safe. A flashing light means an active misfire that is dumping unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, which can destroy it in minutes. A solid light means book a diagnostic soon.
Do you diagnose all makes?
Yes. Our equipment covers European, Japanese, Korean and American makes, including manufacturer-specific systems on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota and more.
The fault comes and goes. Can you still find it?
Usually. The car stores freeze-frame data from when the fault occurred, and we can road test with the equipment connected to catch intermittent faults. Tell us the conditions when it happens.
