Clutch Replacement Norwich

A worn clutch is confirmed before it is quoted, the flywheel is inspected while the gearbox is out, and every job carries our 3-month / 3,000-mile workmanship guarantee.

A clutch does not fail overnight. It slips a little on the A47 climb out of Norwich, the biting point creeps up the pedal travel, the car judders pulling away at the Thickthorn roundabout, and one day it will not take drive at all. Catching it at the first stage is the difference between a straightforward replacement and being recovered from the hard shoulder. At Ber Street we replace clutches on cars and vans of all makes, we confirm the diagnosis before we quote, and we inspect the dual mass flywheel while the gearbox is out so there are no surprises on the invoice.

How to Tell the Clutch Is Going

  • Slipping. The revs rise but the car does not accelerate to match, most obvious in a high gear under load. The friction plate is worn.
  • A high biting point. The clutch engages near the top of the pedal travel where it used to engage near the bottom.
  • Judder on take-off. Shaking as the clutch engages, often oil contamination or a worn dual mass flywheel.
  • A heavy, stiff or spongy pedal. Sometimes the clutch, sometimes the cable, hydraulics or release bearing.
  • A burning smell after hills or heavy traffic, and a rattle at idle that goes when the pedal is pressed (release bearing or flywheel).

Two of those five can be something other than the clutch itself, which is why we test-drive and inspect before quoting rather than assuming.

What a Clutch Replacement Involves

The clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox, so the gearbox has to come out. On a small front-wheel-drive car that is a few hours; on a car where the subframe has to drop, or a van with a heavy gearbox, it is most of a day. We fit a complete clutch kit, friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing together, never one part alone, and on cars with a concentric slave cylinder inside the bellhousing we replace that too, because it cannot be reached again without repeating the whole job. Gearbox oil is refilled, driveshaft seals and the rear crank seal are checked while they are exposed, and everything is torqued to specification.

The Dual Mass Flywheel Question

Most modern diesels and many petrol cars have a dual mass flywheel that absorbs engine vibration. It wears with the clutch, and a worn one causes rattle at idle and judder on pull-away and will shorten the life of a new clutch. Because it sits behind the clutch, the honest time to replace it is while the gearbox is out. We inspect and measure it and tell you whether it needs replacing, rather than either fitting one by default or leaving a worn one in to keep the quote low. Our clutch replacement cost guide explains why this single part is the biggest variable in any clutch quote.

Good to know

How long does a clutch replacement take? From a few hours on a simple front-wheel-drive car to a full day or more where a subframe has to come out or on a van. We tell you when you book so you can plan for the car being off the road.

Cars and Vans, All Makes

Ford Focus and Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Astra, Volkswagen Golf and Polo, Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, Toyota and the Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro and Transporter vans that the tradespeople of Sprowston, Hellesdon and Costessey run on. Van clutches are heavier and take longer, and a van that is slipping is a van that will strand you with a load on; we prioritise them and do early drop-off so the vehicle is back the next day where the parts allow.

How We Quote

Registration and symptoms over the phone, a test drive and inspection when you arrive, then a written quote from the book time for your exact car, with the clutch kit and, separately, what the flywheel would add if it is needed. Nothing extra is done without your approval. Call 07933 900901; open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, free parking at 100-106 Ber Street. If the gearbox itself is the problem, see our gearbox repair page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a clutch replacement take?

From a few hours on a simple front-wheel-drive car to a full day or more where a subframe has to come out or on a van. We tell you when you book so you can plan for the car being off the road.

Do I need a new flywheel with the clutch?

Only if the dual mass flywheel is worn. We inspect it while the gearbox is out and tell you honestly. Replacing a worn one at the same time avoids paying the whole labour again later.

Can I drive with a slipping clutch?

For a short while, gently, but it gets worse quickly and can leave you stranded. Slipping also overheats the flywheel, which can turn a clutch job into a clutch and flywheel job. Book it in promptly.

Is it the clutch or the hydraulics?

A spongy or sinking pedal can be air or a leak in the clutch hydraulics rather than a worn clutch. We test both before quoting, because the difference in cost is large.

Do you replace clutches on vans?

Yes, on Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro, Transporter, Trafic, Boxer and Relay among others. Van clutches are heavier and take longer, and we prioritise them so the van is back earning.
