Hybrid and Electric Car Servicing Norwich

Less to change, more to check. EVs and hybrids still wear brakes, tyres, suspension and 12-volt batteries, and their schedules are stricter than owners expect.

The idea that an electric car needs no servicing is a myth that manufacturers themselves do not support: every EV and hybrid has a service schedule, and skipping it can affect the warranty exactly as on a petrol car. There is no engine oil to change on a full EV, but there are brakes that corrode because regenerative braking hardly uses them, tyres that wear fast under the weight and torque, a 12-volt battery that strands more EV owners than the traction battery ever does, cabin filters, coolant for the battery and power electronics, and suspension carrying several hundred extra kilograms over Norfolk potholes. At Ber Street we service Toyota and Lexus hybrids, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, MG, Volkswagen ID models, Tesla and the rest to their schedules.

What a Hybrid or EV Service Covers

  • Brakes: because regenerative braking does most of the stopping, the friction brakes can sit unused, corrode and seize. We inspect, clean and free the callipers and sliders and measure pads and discs.
  • Tyres: wear pattern, tread and pressures, with the correct high load rating; see our electric car tyres page.
  • 12-volt battery: tested and replaced when tired. A flat 12V battery leaves an EV as dead as any petrol car.
  • Cooling: the coolant loops for the traction battery, motor and power electronics checked and changed at the manufacturer interval.
  • Cabin filter and, on hybrids, the engine oil, filters and plugs to the hybrid's own schedule.
  • Suspension, steering and wheel bearings, all working harder under the extra weight.
  • Diagnostics: fault codes from the hybrid or EV systems read and explained.

Hybrids: Toyota, Lexus and the Rest

A Prius, Corolla, Yaris or C-HR hybrid, a Lexus UX or NX, a Kia Niro or Hyundai Ioniq hybrid still has a petrol engine that needs oil, filters and plugs, and because that engine starts and stops constantly it works its oil hard. Hybrid brakes seize for the same reason EV brakes do. High-mileage hybrid drivers, and there are a lot of them in Norwich, benefit from an interim oil change between full services. Plug-in hybrids that are mostly charged at home can go months barely running the engine, which brings its own issues with fuel ageing and short-run contamination; we take that into account.

What We Do Not Do

We service the mechanical, electrical and cooling systems of hybrids and EVs and diagnose faults, including reading the hybrid and EV control systems. We do not repair or open high-voltage traction batteries; where a fault lies inside the battery pack we tell you so and point you to the right specialist or dealer, because that work needs manufacturer-specific equipment and training. Being honest about that boundary is part of servicing these cars properly.

Good to know

Do electric cars need servicing? Yes. Every manufacturer publishes a schedule covering brakes, tyres, suspension, cabin filter, battery and electronics coolant and the 12-volt battery, and skipping it can affect the warranty just as on a petrol car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do electric cars need servicing?

Yes. Every manufacturer publishes a schedule covering brakes, tyres, suspension, cabin filter, battery and electronics coolant and the 12-volt battery, and skipping it can affect the warranty just as on a petrol car.

Why do EV brakes need attention if they hardly wear?

Because they hardly get used. Regenerative braking does most of the stopping, so the friction brakes sit, corrode and seize. Servicing cleans and frees them so they work when you need them and pass the MOT.

Do you work on Teslas?

Yes, for servicing, brakes, tyres, suspension and 12-volt battery work. High-voltage battery faults are referred to the manufacturer or a specialist.

Does a hybrid need oil changes?

Yes, and arguably more attention than a petrol car, because the engine starts and stops constantly. Follow the schedule and consider an interim oil change if you cover high mileage.

Can an independent garage service my EV under warranty?

Yes, provided the manufacturer schedule is followed and correct parts and fluids are used, which is how we work. You get an itemised record.
