Interim Service Norwich
The half-way service for cars that cover serious miles: fresh oil, a proper look round and a written report, usually done while you wait.
An interim service exists because oil does not last as long as a year on a car that commutes the A11 from Wymondham every day or runs deliveries around Norwich all week. Six months or 6,000 miles is the usual point at which a high-mileage car benefits from fresh oil and a proper inspection, halfway between annual full services. It is also the right service for a car with a recent full service that just needs its oil changed and a check-over before a long trip. At Ber Street it takes about an hour and you can wait with a coffee while we do it.
What an Interim Service Includes
- Engine oil and oil filter, with the manufacturer-specified oil grade and approval.
- All fluid levels checked and topped up: coolant, brake fluid, power steering where fitted, screenwash.
- Tyres: tread depth and wear pattern recorded, pressures set including the spare.
- Brakes: pads and discs visually inspected and measured where accessible.
- Battery and charging system tested.
- Lights, wipers, washers, horn and warning lamps checked.
- A look underneath for leaks, exhaust condition and obvious suspension wear.
- Service light reset and a written report with anything advisory priced.
It does not include the filters, plugs and detailed inspection of a full service; it is the lighter job by design.
Who Needs One
Drivers covering 15,000 miles or more a year; couriers, sales reps and tradespeople; diesel cars used mostly for short journeys, which contaminate their oil quickly; older cars that use a little oil; and anyone about to drive a long way on holiday who wants the car checked. If you do under 10,000 miles a year, an annual full service is usually enough and we will say so rather than sell you a service you do not need. Our interim vs full service guide sets out the difference.

Oil: The Point of the Exercise
Modern long-life oils are impressive but they still degrade, shear and fill with soot, and on turbocharged and direct-injection engines fresh oil is the cheapest protection there is for the turbo and the timing chain. We use the exact grade and manufacturer approval your engine specifies, not a generic oil, because on a modern engine the wrong approval can cause real damage. Our engine oil guide explains what the codes on the bottle mean.
How often should I have an interim service? Every six months or 6,000 miles if you cover high mileage, halfway between annual full services. On a low-mileage car an annual full service is usually enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have an interim service?
Every six months or 6,000 miles if you cover high mileage, halfway between annual full services. On a low-mileage car an annual full service is usually enough.
What is the difference between an interim and a full service?
An interim changes the oil and filter and checks the car over; a full service adds air and cabin filters, spark plugs as due and a detailed inspection of brakes, steering, suspension and electrics to the manufacturer schedule.
How long does an interim service take?
About an hour on most cars, and you can wait while we do it.
Is an interim service enough to keep my warranty?
Only if it matches what the manufacturer schedule calls for at that interval. Most schedules require a full service annually; the interim is an addition for high-mileage cars, not a replacement.
Can I have an interim service and an MOT together?
Yes. We service the car, check it against the MOT items and arrange the test at a DVSA-approved centre in the same visit.
